What is Medical Nutrition Therapy?

Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is a process of managing nutrition-related chronic diseases through individualized nutrition counseling and intervention, and self-management training.

MNT is a comprehensive treatment that entails:

·      Defining and assessing weight status, medical and nutrition history, and risk factors that may affect health and well-being

·      Assessing current level of physical activity and physical limitations

·      Identifying medications and over-the-counter dietary supplements that may be associated with drug/nutrient interactions or cause unwanted weight gain or loss, or other side effects

·      Defining calorie, protein, and fluid needs, as well as other nutrients

·      Assisting clients and health providers to establish realistic expectations concerning treatment options and outcomes, and develop an appropriate nutrition care plan based on mutual goals and expectations

·      Evaluating progress towards desired goals and revise the treatment plan as appropriate

·      Establishing a plan for follow-up and long-term monitoring or continuing care program

MNT begins with a comprehensive nutrition assessment in an individual, face-to-face appointment with a Licensed Nutrition Specialist.  You will be asked to complete a food intake record and questionnaire and submit them to the nutritionist specialist at least 2 days prior to the appointment.  This will provide specific information about your diet, family and medical history.  The initial appointment will last approximately 45 to 60 minutes.  A one month follow-up appointment is recommended to assess nutritional progress and to modify the nutrition care plan, if necessary.  Additional follow ups can take place 3 and 6 months after the initial assessment, as mutually desired by you and the nutritionist specialist.

Which professionals are qualified to provide MNT services?

Registered Dietitians (RD's) are the food and nutrition experts.  These professionals have earned a minimum of a pre-med bachelor's degree at a US accredited university or college, and completed at least 900 hours of supervised dietetics practice.  RD's must also pass a national accreditation exam after completing their coursework and supervised practice, and must complete continuing professional education requirements on an on-going basis.  Some RD's specialize in practice areas such as diabetes, renal, or pediatric nutrition.

Does MNT require a doctor referral?

Yes, MNT requires a doctor referral in order to provide specialized dietary prescriptions based on an individual's medical and nutrition history.  Ask your doctor for a referral for Medical Nutrition Therapy by a Registered Dietitian.  The referral should include the physician name, address and phone, as well as the primary diagnosis, relevant labs and other medical conditions, and any diet or exercise restrictions.

Are MNT services covered by health insurance?

MNT services are covered by Medicare and Medicaid and may be covered by your private health insurance plan.  Check with your employer or insurance carrier to determine your level of MNT coverage. more
